Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) could provide thousands of pounds of assistance towards installing low-carbon heating alternatives such as heat pumps to your home. Launched in April 2022, the government scheme is designed to help meet the UK’s 2050 net zero emissions target and is designed for homeowners in England and Wales to help people afford the upfront costs required for low-carbon heating.

0% vat

Zero rated VAT has been applied to solar panels and heat pumps in order to increase the uptake of installing energy-saving materials in the UK. The announcement by Rishi Sunak was well received and eliminates the 5%VAT rate that existed, reducing the cost of an installation of solar or heat pumps.

Green Homes Grant

The Green Homes Grant has now been replaced by Local Authority Delivery or LA Flex. It was a £1.5bn scheme launched in September 2020, designed to help homeowners install energy-efficiency improvements, lowering their emissions and energy bills. It was scrapped having reached just 10% of the 600,000 homes chancellor Rishi Sunak promised would be improved. Following its closure, £320m was then allocated to local authority delivery.

Green mortgages

Leading mortgage providers are helping homeowners to purchase energy saving technologies with options like Capital Release or Additional Borrowing to help pay for improvements to a home’s efficiency. The schemes aim to reduce a home’s carbon footprint and help homeowners with their energy bills. Improving your home’s energy performance certificate (EPC) can help your property’s value increase indicating that your home would have lower running costs.

FIT Feed-in Tariff

This was a government-incentive offering cash payments to homes that produce renewable electricity through technologies such as solar PV or wind turbines and has now been replaced by the Smart Export Guarantee.

Smart Export Guarantee

The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a government-initiated export tariff for British businesses and homes who have installed small-scale, renewable or low carbon technology. It pays homeowners for electricity they have generated from solar or wind turbines and fed into the grid. It replaces the Feed-in Tariff (FIT) but requires homeowners to sign up to a SEG tariff with an energy company otherwise you will not receive any payments.

Local Authority Eligibility Flexibility (LA Flex /LAD)

This funding means that homeowners may be able to improve the energy efficiency of their homes with little to no cost. This is Local-Authority backed financial assistance for private tenants or homeowners to install home energy-efficiency measures including insulation, heat pumps and other forms of heating. The money comes from the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) consisting of the major energy companies who have a commitment to help householders make fuel efficiencies. The eligibility criteria is based on either being in a low income household (under £31,000) or health vulnerabilities and an EPC rating of D-G depending on the eligibility route taken. Information can be found on local authority websites or by approaching your energy supplier directly.

It is comprised of Local Authority Delivery Phase 3 (LAD3) for low-invome homes using mains gas and Home Upgrade Grant phase 2 (HUG2) which is the same but for offgas households. This is delivered in different ways depending on the authority – you need to check with your council for eligibility and delivery.

EVHS wallbox grant

The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme (EVHS) was reduced in scope as of 1 April 2022 to exclude homeowners (including people with mortgages) who live in single dwellings such as bungalows, semi-detached, detached, or terraced housing. Meaning that this is only now applicable for those that live in flats or in rental accommodation. These installations need to be completed by an OZEV approved supplier like Green Building Renewables who will complete the claim on your behalf.
